WASHINGTON - American University's Rubena Sukaj has excelled both on and off the volleyball court this season and has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 2 First Team, CoSIDA officials announced Thursday.

Off the court, Sukaj is a junior in the Kogod School of Business and has a cumulative GPA of 3.61. She is majoring in business administration with a specialization in accounting. After both her freshman and sophomore seasons, Sukaj was named to the Patriot League's Academic Honor Roll.

On the court, Sukaj has become one of the most accomplished players in the PL. She currently leads the conference in both kills per game (5.38) and aces per game (0.72) while ranking fifth and sixth in the nation respectively. Sukaj has earned four PL Baden Player of the Week honors this season and was once named the ECAC Division I Player of the Week. Sukaj's play has been instrumental to American's success as it holds a 22-7 overall record, an 11-1 mark in conference play and will play this weekend for its seventh-consecutive PL Regular Season Championship and home-court advantage in the PL Tournament.

Sukaj is joined on the Academic All-District teams by fellow PL student-athletes Rachael Breinling and Lauren Teal of Army, Christine Strawson and Katie Fitzpatrick of Holy Cross, Shannon Pitsch of Bucknell and Rachel Dougherty of Navy. To be eligible for this award, student-athletes must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and be a major contributor to their team.
