Eagles Volleyball Quickly Puts Away Howard

Oct. 5, 2004
WASHINGTON - Junior middle blocker Cutrina Biddulph (Reseda, Calif./Granada Falls) set a career-high with 19 kills in leading the American University volleyball team to a 3-0 win over host Howard Tuesday.
The Eagles never had much trouble with the 4-9 Bison, with game scores of 30-16, 30-24 and 30-20. As a team, American hit .371 and had 15 aces while holding Howard to just 25 kills and an .039 hitting percentage.
Individually, Biddulph stood out. She compiled 19 kills with just two errors in 30 swings for a .567 hitting percentage. Tonight was the second consecutive season in which Biddulph set a personal best in kills against the Bison. Last year, in the Eagles 3-0 win over Howard at Bender Arena, Biddulph put home 16 kills. Biddulph added four block assists and three digs to her totals this evening.
No other Eagle had more than nine kills. Sophomore Elizabeth Maloney (Toronto, Canada/Richview C.I.), coming off a week in which she was named the Patriot League Player of the Week, hit .312 with nine kills, four aces, five digs and two block assists.
With the win, American improves to 8-4 overall, and head coach Barry Goldberg improves his career win total to 382. With 16 regular season matches remaining and two potential Patriot League Tournament matches, Goldberg has an outside shot of making it to 400 career wins this season. Goldberg's 374 wins entering this season ranked him 40th among the NCAA Division I's winningest active coaches by victories. No other coach in the top 50 in victories had coached fewer than Goldberg's 15 seasons.
The Eagles return to action this weekend with a pair of matches at Colgate and Bucknell. The Colgate match is Friday at 7 p.m., and Bucknell begins at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
