AU players at the NCAA Selection Show

NCAA Championship Bracket

WASHINGTON – American University earned its fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Volleyball Tournament and will travel to Provo, Utah, to play at 13th-seeded Brigham Young on Friday, Dec. 1 at 9 p.m. ET in a first-round match.

The pairings were announced by the NCAA in a selection show on Sunday evening.

Kennesaw State (21-4) will face Oregon (17-11) at 6 p.m. ET in the other first-round match on Friday at BYU. First-round winners will play on Saturday.

BYU (28-2) was co-champion of the West Coast Conference, matching San Diego with a 17-1 league record. American opened the 2017 season against WCC member Santa Clara, losing to the Broncos in five sets on Aug. 25.

The Cougars, ranked seventh in the most recent coaches poll, have won seven straight and 20 of their last 21 matches, with the only loss coming at home to USD.

AU is 0-3 all-time against BYU, but has not faced the Cougars in the NCAA Tournament. American last played BYU on Sept. 6, 2008, losing in four sets. Oregon, which plays in the other first-round match Friday at BYU, was ranked 24th in last Monday's AVCA poll.

American is 26-7 overall and is riding an 18-match winning streak. The Eagles' last loss came on Sept. 26 in a four-set defeat at Navy in the second Patriot League match of the season.

Since then, AU has been stretched to five sets twice and four sets three times, sweeping both matches in the PL Tournament with Lehigh and Navy to capture its 15th tournament title in the 17 years American has been a member of the league.

AU's winning streak is tied for the fifth-longest currently active in NCAA Division I. VCU has won 27 straight.

Junior outside Aleksandra Kazala won her second straight Patriot League Player of the Year honor, becoming the seventh AU student-athlete to win the award and the fourth to win multiple times.

Sophomore Kristen Largay was the Patriot League Libero of the Year in balloting by the league's head coaches.

Kazala was American's lone selection on the All-Patriot League first team, while junior setter Kennedy Etheridge, sophomore middle Vela McBride and freshman outside Helena Elbaek made second team.
