@AU_Volleyball Outlasts Navy in Five Sets

WASHINGTON – Aleksandra Kazala finished with 17 kills, while Vela McBride had 14 kills and no errors as American University recovered from a two-set deficit to beat Navy in five sets Friday in a Patriot League volleyball match at Bender Arena.

The Midshipmen won the first two sets 25-23 and 25-19, forcing the Eagles to win the final three. AU prevailed with wins of 25-20, 25-21 and 15-9 to win its 10th straight match and the 12th in the last 13 matches.

American improved to 18-7 overall and took over first place in the Patriot League with a 9-1 mark. Navy is now 17-5 overall and 7-2 in the league after suffering back-to-back five-set losses. The Mids lost at Army West Point on Saturday.

Kazala finished with a double-double, also getting 14 digs and five blocks. McBride matched a career-high with 14 kills on just 18 attempts and added eight blocks.

Shannon Webb had 11 kills, with Cheyenne Orsi finishing with seven kills and 10 blocks, the most by an Eagles player this year. Libero Kristen Largay led AU with 21 digs, with Megan Crush coming off the bench for 11.

Setter Kennedy Etheridge also had a double-double, getting 41 assists and 12 digs.

Navy put four players in double figures in kills, led by Tara Dotzauer, with 18. Libero Sydney Shearn had 30 digs, with setter Patricia Mattingly finishing with 55 assists and 10 digs.

American will have a week off before hosting Army West Point on Friday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m.

Tickets to all AU home volleyball matches are available at the Bender Arena Box Office. General admission seats are $8 for adults and $5 for children. AU students are admitted free with a valid student ID.

Those attending this Saturday's basketball 'Chalk Talk' and open practice, field hockey, and men's soccer games or the myriad of All-American Weekend festivities on campus will have the chance to dress like an Eagle at the Athletic Department Yard Sale.

Stop by the Bender Arena lobby from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. as the Department of Athletics invites everyone to a sale of AU athletics apparel. This includes game-worn uniforms, warmups, jackets, practice gear and sneakers, as well as some unused apparel.

The sale is CASH ONLY and items will be priced from $5 - $40. Proceeds will benefit the AU Department of Athletics & Recreation.
