Milestone Helps Kazala to PL Weekly Award

Aleksandra Kazala blocks against Zhejiang China

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – It was quite the week for Aleksandra Kazala.

In addition to leading the American University volleyball team to a 3-0 mark in sweeps over Delaware State, Lehigh and Lafayette, her final kill of a busy week gave her 1,000 for her career.

All this earned Kazala the selection as the Patriot League Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 8. It is her second PL Player of the Week Award this season and the fifth of her career.

By converting a set point in the second set in Saturday's win over Lafayette, Kazala became the 13th Eagle in history to hit the 1,000-kill plateau for her career. She finished with 14 kills in two sets against the Leopards.

Kazala got her 12th double-double of the season with 18 kills and a dozen digs in a crucial match with Lehigh. The straight-set victory lifted AU into a second-place tie in the Patriot League standings with the Mountain Hawks, a game behind first-place Navy.

AU freshman Helena Elbaek earned honorable mention from the league after her strong week. She hit .532 with 27 kills and only two errors in the Eagles' three matches.

Loyola Maryland middle blocker Mackenzie Fedota earned Rookie of the Week honors from the league after posting 18 kills and nine blocks in two matches.

American finishes a four-match homestand on Wednesday against George Washington at 7 p.m.

Tickets for all AU home volleyball matches are available at the Bender Arena Box Office. General admission seats are $8 for adults and $5 for children. AU students are admitted free with a valid student ID.
