WASHINGTON – The American University volleyball team starts a busy and important week of matches on Wednesday when it plays host to non-conference foe Delaware State at 7 p.m. in Bender Arena.
The Eagles, now 10-7 overall after winning four of their last five matches, will also host Patriot League opponents Lehigh (Friday, 7 p.m.) and Lafayette (Saturday, 4 p.m.). The Mountain Hawks come to D.C. tied with Navy for first place in the Patriot League with a 4-0 record, one game ahead of AU.
On Wednesday, American will host a Delaware State squad that is winless in 15 matches so far this season. The Eagles come into the week with junior outside hitter Aleksandra Kazala needing just 32 kills to become the 13th player in AU history to reach the 1,000-kill plateau for her career.
Junior setter Kennedy Etheridge averages 8.57 assists per set, while sophomore libero Kristen Largay has a team-best 4.56 digs-per-set average. Freshman Helena Elbaek leads AU with 41 blocks, one ahead of senior middle Erin Swartz.
The Hornets are led offensively by senior outside Sabrina Szmajduch, who averages 2.38 kills per set. Senior Gabriella Enriquez is the Del State setter, while senior Alliyah McBean has a team-best 3.67 digs per set.
Tickets for all AU home volleyball matches are available at the Bender Arena Box Office. General admission seats are $8 for adults and $5 for children. AU students are admitted free with a valid student ID.
