WASHINGTON – Aleksandra Kazala had a match-high 12 kills and 15 digs to lift American University to a 25-22, 25-14, 25-23 victory over Loyola Maryland in the Patriot League volleyball opener for both teams on Friday.
The Eagles, who have won three of their last four matches, improved to 8-6 on the season. The Greyhounds are now 6-8 after having lost their third straight.
Shannon Webb and Vela McBride added seven kills each for the Eagles, with Kristen Largay (13) and Webb (11) hitting double figures in digs. AU was plagued with attack errors in the match, having 21 errors and hitting just .204.
Ann Ernst had 11 kills to lead the Greyhounds, who got 11 digs from Elena Scarano and five blocks each from Haley Puddy and Mackenzie Fedota.
There were 15 ties in the opening set and Loyola held a 20-19 lead down the stretch. A four-point run on Webb's service helped AU take control and a kill by Kazala ended the set.
Webb had four of the Eagles' 15 kills in the second set, as American hit .364. A six-point run put the Eagles ahead 9-4 and the edge was never less than four points afterwards.
Kazala had five kills and McBride had four in the final set for the Eagles. The last of four ties came at 22-22 and Kazala ended the match with her final kill of the night.
American plays at Navy on Tuesday evening. The Eagles' next home match is on Wednesday, Oct. 4 against Delaware State.
