WASHINGTON – American University continues its tough early season schedule against strong competition this weekend when it hosts the American Volleyball Classic.
Princeton plays at AU on Friday evening at 7 p.m., while Iowa opens its tournament action at Howard at the same time.
All four teams will come for a full day of action at Bender Arena on Saturday. The Eagles face Iowa at 10 a.m. and play Howard at 7 p.m. Saturday's action also has Princeton facing Howard at noon and Princeton playing Iowa at 5 p.m.
The Eagles (5-5) were led last weekend by freshman Helena Elbaek, who earned Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors. Junior Aleksandra Kazala remains the offensive leader for AU, averaging 4.63 kills per set.
Princeton is 6-1 thus far and holds wins over Big East Conference opponents Seton Hall and Villanova. Sophomore Maggie O'Connell leads the Tigers with a 3.83 kills average, while sophomore setter Jessie Harris runs the Tigers' offense.
Iowa is off to an 8-2 start, with one of their losses coming to then-No. 2 Stanford. The Hawkeyes are led offensively by junior outside Taylor Louis, with the offense being handed over to freshman setter Gabrielle Orr.
Howard, the defending champion of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, has started 2-8 overall, including a 3-0 loss to the Eagles early this season. Senior Khaila Donaldson has a 3.72 kps average, with junior Tamia Dockery operating as the Bison setter.
Two-day passes are available for all five matches at AU and can be purchased at the Bender Arena Box Office. Full tournament passes are $14 for adults and $7 for children.
Single-day passes are also available for $8 for adults and $5 for children. AU students are admitted free with a valid student ID.
