WASHINGTON – Aleksandra Kazala had seven of her team-high 16 kills in the final set as American swept Morgan State, 25-9, 25-17, 25-13 in a non-conference volleyball match Tuesday night.
The Eagles won their fourth straight match and improved to 5-3 on the season. The Bears dropped to 1-6.
Kennedy Etheridge had 23 assists, Kristen Largay had three of the Eagles' nine service aces and freshman Helena Elbaek had four blocks to lead AU. The Eagles had a hitting advantage of .350 to .012 in the match.
Cristen Coryatt had eight kills to lead the Bears, with setter Roi Wallace finishing with 15 assists and eight digs for Morgan State.
AU used a nine-point run in the middle of the first set to take a 16-5 lead, a run that included all three of Largay's service aces. AU had a five-point rally later in the set.
Another five-point run gave the Eagles a 14-9 lead midway through the second set. A block by the Bears cut the deficit to four, but AU never led by less than that the rest of the set.
American took early leads of 5-2, 9-4 and 12-8 and stayed in control of the final set.
The Eagles head to the Active Ankle Challenge at the University of Florida this weekend. AU faces No. 21 Michigan State on Friday morning at 10 a.m. before playing the second-ranked Gators at 7 p.m.
AU will play against UNC Greensboro early Saturday.
American's next home match is on Friday, Sept. 15 when the Eagles host the American Volleyball Classic. AU plays Princeton at 7 p.m. on Friday, with matches against Iowa and Howard on Saturday.
