WASHINGTON – American University welcomes Washington State of the Pac-12 Conference on Sunday at 4 p.m. when it hosts the 11th annual Bender Blue Out volleyball march.
The event is AU's attempt to break the D.C. single-match attendance record, now at 2,629 set Aug. 30, 2015 when the Eagles lost in four sets to then-No. 4 Florida. In fact, each of the top 10 crowds in AU volleyball history have come during Bender Blue Out promotions.
American comes into Sunday's match after opening the season in the D.C. Volleyball Challenge. The Eagles lost a closely contested battle with Santa Clara on Friday in a five-set match that took nearly three hours. AU played at Howard and against Georgetown on Saturday.
The Eagles were the preseason pick to repeat as champions in the recent Patriot League poll. Kazala, a junior outside hitter from Poland, was the pick as Preseason Player of the Year.
Washington State will be playing its first match of the season on Sunday at the Bender Blue Out. The Cougars finished 22-12 overall and tied for fifth in the Pac-12 a year ago, but reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009.
Junior middle Taylor Mims finished fourth in the NCAA a year ago in total blocks, while junior outside McKenna Woodford is the leading returner in kills.
Tickets for Sunday's match will be available at the Bender Arena Box Office. All seats are general admission and are $8 for adults and $5 for children. AU students will be admitted free with a valid student ID.
The match will also be streamed live at www.watchstadium.com and will be available live via Twitter at @WatchStadium.
