CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Aleksandra Kazala, the reigning Volleyball Player of the Year in the Patriot League, has been selected to regain that title this season by the league's coaches and sports information directors, the PL Office announced Wednesday.
Kazala, a junior outside hitter, was one of four American University players voted to the seven-member Preseason All-PL Team. She was joined by junior setter Kennedy Etheridge, senior middle blocker Loren McKenzie and sophomore middle Vela McBride.
McBride was the PL's Rookie of the Year in 2016, while Kazala, Etheridge and McKenzie were first team All-PL picks.
The defending champion Eagles were the selection of the coaches and volleyball SIDs to repeat their team title.
AU received 16 first-place votes, with Army West Point and Colgate picked to finish second and third, respectively.
Army senior middle Carolyn Bockrath, Colgate junior Jaelah Hutchison and Navy junior setter Patricia Mattingly were also Preseason All-League picks.
American opens its 2017 schedule on Friday when it hosts the first day of the D.C. Volleyball Challenge. The Eagles face Santa Clara at 7 p.m., with Georgetown playing Howard at Bender Arena at 5 p.m.
AU's 1997 team which won the Colonial Athletic Association championship will be honored at the intermission of the Eagles' match on Friday.
AU will hold its annual Bender Blue Out event on Sunday at 4 p.m. when the Eagles host Washington State.
Tickets for all AU home volleyball matches are available at the AU Athletic Box Office and are $8 for general admission and $5 for children. AU students can attend for free with a valid student ID.
