Eagles Fall at Hofstra in Tourney Finale

Eagles Fall at Hofstra in Tourney Finale

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.Aleksandra Kazala and Shannon Webb each finished with nine kills for American University, which lost to host Hofstra, 25-12, 25-18 and 25-13 on Saturday in the Hofstra / Stony Brook volleyball tournament.

The Eagles, who went 2-1 in the tournament, fell to 9-6 overall on the season. The Pride improved to 10-3.

Kazala and freshman Vela McBride were selected to the all-tournament team. The honor marked the third time this season Kazala earned all-tourney recognition for the Eagles.

American, which was down to seven players due to a rash of injuries in the early season, got 24 assists from Kennedy Etheridge. Webb led AU with nine digs.

"I thought we played hard and got better as the match progressed, but it just was not enough to succeed against a good team playing in their home gym," said AU head coach Barry Goldberg.

"We had a lineup change to start the match as Vela needed a rest from her knee pain. She played through two tough matches on Saturday, and without her we had some difficulty. She did a remarkable job for us this weekend, as did all of our other student-athletes.

"I'm looking forward to our kicking off the Patriot League schedule and hope to have a few more players on the roster ready to help us contend for another PL title."

AU was within 9-8 in the first set when Hofstra reeled off a 10-1 run. The Pride kept control of the set the rest of the way.

The Eagles pulled out to an early 6-1 edge in the second set, but the Pride pulled even by 9-9 and moved ahead at 13-10. The closest AU came thereafter was two points, as the Pride kept control.

Hofstra led 5-1, 7-2 and 14-7 in the third set before the Eagles got going. AU pulled within 18-17, but could never tie the set. AU held off three match points before the Pride secured the win.

American returns to Bender Arena next weekend to open defense of its Patriot League title. The Eagles play host to Bucknell on Friday at 7 p.m. before Lafayette comes to D.C. on Saturday at 2 p.m.
