EASTON, Pa. – Led by 16 kills and 11 digs from senior outside hitter Allison Cappellino, the American University volleyball team earned a straight-set road victory over Lafayette in its Patriot League opener on Friday evening.
The Eagles posted set scores of 25-11, 25-18, 25-22, to move to 9-5 on the season and 1-0 in the league. Meanwhile, the Leopards dropped to 9-4 on the season and 1-1 in the Patriot League.
American got out to a hot start in the first set, scoring the first five points before taking a 12-1 lead. Lafayette never tallied more than two straight points in the set, as AU rolled to the double-digit win.
The Leopards rebounded in set two, keeping it close early. However, a 4-0 run by American broke a 13-13 tie, and the Eagles were able to remain on top to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set was a back-and-forth affair that remained close throughout. Neither team led by more than two points until late in the set, when the Eagles pulled ahead to take a 23-20 advantage. Although the Leopards were able to cut the margin to one, a pair of Lafayette errors gave American the set victory and the match win.
"I thought tonight was a good team win," said Cappellino. "We came out strong in set one and that really set the mood for the match.
"Winning in three tonight was a good way to open up Patriot League play. Hopefully we can keep up the consistent play tomorrow at Bucknell."
American faces Bucknell on Saturday at 5 p.m. The Bison are coming off a five-set victory over Navy.
