WASHINGTON – This weekend, the American University volleyball team begins its quest to capture its 13th Patriot League title in 15 seasons, as the Eagles open league play with a pair of road games.
American heads to Lafayette for a 7 p.m. match on Friday, before visiting Bucknell on Saturday at 5 p.m.
The Eagles enter the weekend with an 8-5 overall record after taking second place at the AU Volleyball Classic last week. American defeated William & Mary and UMBC in straight sets before dropping a five-set thriller to Virginia.
Seniors Allison Cappellino and Monika Smidova represented American on the all-tournament team. Cappellino averaged 3.0 kills and 2.45 digs per set for the weekend, while Smidova added 10.2 assists, 2.6 digs, 1.0 kills and 0.9 blocks per set.
For the season, Cappellino leads the Eagles with 2.86 kills and 2.58 digs per set, while senior Kristyna Lindovska adds 2.45 kills and 1.0 blocks per set. Smidova averages 9.23 assists and 2.95 digs per set, along with a .371 attack percentage. Additionally, sophomore Erin Swartz leads the league in blocks per set with 1.39.
Heading into Friday's match, Lafayette owns a 9-3 overall record and 1-0 mark in the Patriot League. The Leopards, led by 11 kills from senior Brianne Giangiobbe, opened their league slate with a 3-0 road victory over Lehigh.
Giangiobbe averages 3.12 kills per set to lead Lafayette, while Lauren Pisauro ranks first in the Patriot League in digs per set (4.67). The Leopards also lead the league in service aces per set, paced by Jet Manzi (0.58) and Maria Balus (0.40), who rank first and second, respectively.
Bucknell enters the weekend with a 6-5 overall record and 0-1 mark in the Patriot League. The Bison, who dropped their league opener to Colgate last weekend, will host Navy on Friday before facing the Eagles.
Karen Campbell leads the Bison with 3.44 kills per set and a .382 attack percentage, while also ranking second in the Patriot League in blocks per set (1.13).
