Volleyball Earns Patriot League Regular Season Title; Hosts Patriot League Tournament Next Weekend

The American University volleyball team clinched its 11th Patriot League Regular Season Championship with a 3-0 sweep of defending champion Colgate on Saturday afternoon in Bender Arena. With the win, the Eagles secured the right to host the 2013 Patriot League Tournament next Saturday, November 23 and Sunday, November 24. 

Colgate (21-8, 13-3) tallied the first two points of the match on consecutive kills by Diane Seely but the Eagles answered with six straight tallies and forced the Raiders to call a timeout. The teams traded points with back-to-back kills from Allison Cappellino and Monika Smidova giving American a 19-15 lead. Smidova added another kill out of a Colgate timeout as the Eagles maintained its advantage on its way to a 25-19 win, with Kristyna Lindovska adding the final kill of the set.

American (30-2, 15-1) and the Raiders traded tallies before the Eagles strung together three straight points for a 13-11 lead. American went on a 6-1 run for a five-point advantage and consecutive kills from Juliana Crum put the Eagles up 20-14. Lindovska added back-to-back kills for the 24-18 advantage and a Kelly McCaddin kill secured the 25-19 victory and 2-0 lead in the match. 

The third set was tied eight times before a Lindovska kill sparked a 5-0 run by American, giving it a 12-8 advantage. Colgate fought back to knot it up at 17-all on a block by Kenzie Hume and Mari Faines and took the lead on an error by the Eagles. American retook the advantage on a kill by Morgan Hendrix and ace by Smidova but the Raiders battled back to tie it up again. Colgate went up 23-21 but after an Eagles' timeout a Cappellino kill sparked a 3-0 run, with Sarah Katz giving American the 24-23 lead. Colgate called a timeout and the teams traded points with kills by Cappellino and Lindovska giving the Eagles its 22nd sweep of the year with a 30-28 win.

Lindovska led the Eagles with 14 kills, hitting .407, and Crum finished with 13 on Senior Day. Cappellino tallied 10 kills with zero errors to hit .556 on the day. Smidova facilitated the attack with 36 assists, also notching three aces, and Crum recorded a team-high nine digs. Hendrix and Lindovska had four blocks apiece. The Eagles outhit Colgate .356 to .258 for the match. 

Seely and Lindsay Young each posted 14 kills to lead the Raiders and Kaylee Fifer finished with 39 assists. Allie Dyer led the defensive effort with 10 digs and Seely also added four blocks.

Tickets for the 2013 Patriot League Volleyball Championships will be available at the door of Saturday and Sunday's matches and are priced at $8 for adults and $5 for youth and seniors. Students from all Patriot League member institutions with a current student ID will be admitted for free.
