Volleyball Welcomes Lafayette, Lehigh to Bender Arena This Weekend


The American University volleyball team continues Patriot League play this weekend with a pair of home matches. The Eagles host Lafayette on Friday, September 28 at 7 p.m. before taking on Lehigh on Saturday, September 29 at 4 p.m.

American (8-6, 1-1) opened conference play last weekend against Army and Holy Cross. The Eagles took a two-set lead against the Black Knights on Friday night before falling, 3-2, in the match. Morgan Hendrix tied the single match block assist record in the game, notching 11 for a career-best 12 total blocks on the night. American returned on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 sweep of Holy Cross as Kelly McCaddin led the team with a .474 hitting percentage and a team-high 10 kills.

Sara Rishell and McCaddin lead the Eagles with 2.56 and 2.51 kps, respectively. Hendrix has a conference-best 1.40 bps this season and Allison Cappellino has a team-high 4.20 dps for the American defense, while leading the Patriot League with 20 service aces. Kylann Scheidt has paced the offense with 8.23 aps.

Lafayette (8-5, 1-1) also opened the conference season with a 1-1 record, defeating Bucknell, 3-1, before falling to Colgate, 3-0, to close out the weekend. Karissa Ciliento led the Leopards' attack in both games, tallying a season-high 20 kills against Bucknell and 11 versus Colgate. She also added 23 digs on Friday for her first double-double of the season.

Ciliento leads Lafayette this season with 2.54 kps, also adding 18 service aces on the year. Michelle Woodworth has a team-high 4.35 dps to lead the defense while Sarah Frohnapfel has registered 7.48 aps.

American is 20-1 all-time against the Leopards. The Eagles recorded a 3-0 win over Lafayette in Easton, Pa. last season and registered a 3-1 when the Leopards visited Bender Arena to close out the regular season.

Lehigh (4-7, 1-1) fell to Colgate, 3-0, and picked up a 3-1 victory over Bucknell in its Patriot League openers. Lizzy Silverstein led the team with eight kills against the Raiders while Amanda Clark posted a team-high 16 on Saturday against the Bison.

Ana Vrhel leads the Patriot League with a .315 hitting percentage this season while Amanda Clark has a team-best 2.66 kps. Rachel Charles has notched a team-high 4.32 dps while Dana Raber is averaging 5.88 aps.

American owns a 20-3 record in the all-time series with Lehigh. The two teams split their meetings last season, with the Eagles picking up a 3-0 sweep over the Mountain Hawks in Bender Arena.
