American Women's Soccer Wins Four of Five Patriot League Major Awards

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The American University women's soccer team, gearing up for this weekend's Patriot League Tournament, earned eight All-Patriot League selections and won four of five major awards, league officials announced Thursday. The Eagles had more All-League selections and more major award winners than any other team in the league.
At the Patriot League banquet held Thursday night at Bucknell University, site of the 2007 PL Tournament, league officials announced that AU's Annette Scott was named the PL Defensive Player of the Year, Kelsey Wiggins was named the PL Goalkeeper of the Year, Friederike Engel was named the PL Rookie of the Year and Head Coach Michael Brady won the PL Coach of the Year.
Scott, the leader of a defensive corps that has surrendered just 15 total goals this season and just four in league play. Scott was also named First-Team All-Patriot League this season after being named to the second team in her previous three seasons. Scott becomes the first American student-athlete to win the Defensive POY.
Wiggins recorded four shutouts in seven PL games. She led the Patriot League with a 0.59 goals against average, and allowed just six goals all season long. Wiggins finished second in the league with a save percentage of 0.842. Wiggins is the first American student-athlete to win the Goalkeeper of the Year award.
Engel became the first player in American women's soccer history to win Rookie of the Year honors. She scored two goals on the season, including a game-winner. Engel was also part of a defensive corps that allowed just 15 goals all season.
Meanwhile, Brady earned his first Coach of the Year award following a season where his American team posted an overall record of 10-5-3 and a 4-0-3 PL record. The Eagles were selected to finish fifth in the preseason poll, and instead finished second in the league standings, just one point behind host Bucknell.
