American Loses by Goal to Towson, 2-1

October 20, 2003

WASHINGTON - American University freshman Christina Gonzalez (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) converted a pass from Amy Muller (Rockville Centre, South Side) for a game-tying goal, but it would not be enough. Towson scored a goal at 67:44 to come away with a 2-1 victory. American is now 7-6-1 overall, and 4-1-0 in league play. Kristie Fontana (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) took four shots on the day, and came very close to tying the game in the early part of the second half. Her shot sailed just over the goal. Anabel Jimenez (Kensington, Md./Bullis) and Simone Konig (Gartringen, Germany/School of Economics in Boblingen) entered the game with 15 minutes left to play, and applied plenty of pressure. Jimenez had a header that just missed, and and another shot that went wide. It was the first time Konig was not in the starting lineup (34 games) in her Eagle career and the first missed start for Jimenez since her freshman year. Jimenez and Konig made late appearance because Towson was a non-league opponent, and head coach Michael Brady wanted to try some different combinations. No less than seven freshmen started, with five of them starting for the first time. Towson's Martha Bielefeld scored twice to lead the Tigers offensively. Statistically the game was very close. Shots favored the Tigers by one (12-11), and on corner kicks Towson again held the edge (6-4). Fouls were even at six apiece. Freshman Alison Doyle (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Catholic) made her first start since the George Washington game, and responded with some solid play and two saves on 12 shots. Towson's Yasmin Alter picked up two saves and faced 11 shots by the Eagles. American will next play at Bucknell in a game with a lot of Patriot League playoff implications. AU is currently tied with Colgate for first while Navy and Bucknell are third and fourth respectively. The game will be on Saturday, October 25 at 2 p.m. Scoring: T - Martha Bielefeld (Natalie Klisas, Shannon Jackson; 3:25) AU - Christina Gonzalez (Amy Muller; 33:07) T - Martha Bielefeld (Jen Van Horn; 67:44) Shots: American 11; Towson 12 Fouls: American 6; Towson 6 Corners: American 6; Towson 4 Saves: American 2; Towson 2
