July 31, 2003

WASHINGTON - Earlier this week, European power FC Barcelona utilized American University's Reeves Field to train prior to its match last night against AC Milan at RFK Stadium as part of its 2003 United States tour. Barca trained twice this week on Reeves Field which was named the College Soccer Field of the Year by the Sports Turf Managers Association earlier this year. Barcelona joins Blackburn as professional squads that have used Reeves Field as a training facility this summer. Previous squads to train on American University's campus include Newcastle United, Major League Soccer's D.C. United, Miami Fusion and San Jose Earthquakes. The national teams from the United States, Bolivia and Portugal trained at Reeves in 1996 in preparation for Summer Olympic games held at RFK Stadium. Reeves Field has also been chosen as a practice site for the 2003 Women's World Cup. The time spent at American proved to be beneficial for Barca as the squad defeated the European champion AC Milan squad 2-0 behind goals from Ricardo Quaresma and Ronaldinho.
