RICHMOND, Va. - The American University Women's soccer team continued to have a productive spring season as the Eagles defeated Virginia Commonwealth, 3-0, in Richmond on Tuesday. The game was played in three 30-minute periods, with the Eagles winning the first (2-0) and third (1-0) periods and tying the second period (0-0).
American struck in the first minute of play as freshmen Frederike Engel scored from just inside the penalty box. The Eagles would tally again five minutes later as sophomore Mary Riegler ran on to a perfectly placed cross from Kelsey Brasher, and scored on a one-time finish for the goal.
The third goal of the match came in the last period as junior Lindsay Miller struck an 18-yard shot off a corner kick into the lower left corner of the goal. The Eagles goalkeeping trio of Kelsey Wiggins, Lindsay Farthing and Hannah Radley combined for their second straight shutout this spring.
"It is great to score three quality goals on the road against a solid CAA (Colonial Athletic Association) opponent," Head Coach David Bucciero said. "While we have a lot of areas we need to continue to improve in, I am happy with the progress we are making every day."
