Nov. 1, 2008
LEWISBURG, Pa. - The American University women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision at Bucknell on Saturday to eliminate them from post-season contention. The Eagles finished the season with a 5-10-4 overall record and went 2-2-3 in conference play.
Bucknell (11-6-2, 5-2-0 PL) came out shooting in the first half and controlled the tempo. The Bison got on the board at 25:09 when Nicole Marotta took a shot that Kelliann Doherty collected a rebound off of and put away for a 1-0 lead. The Bison would outshoot the Eagles 11-0 in the first half, but could not tally another goal and entered the intermission up a goal.
Bucknell scored early in the second half, at 46:45, on an unassisted goal by Christa Matlack when AU keeper Kelsey Wiggins was unable to keep a handle on the the initial shot and Matlack got her own rebound for the 2-0 lead.
American would fight back, tallying at 67:14 when Erin Stebbins sent a ball into Kelsey Brasher. Brasher chipped Bison goalie Kathryn Sutton for her team-leading sixth goal of the season, but it was not enough, as Bucknell held on for the win, eliminating American from advancing to the league tournament.
"We lost to a very good team today but showed tremendous heart and guts to come back and get a goal in the second half and battle until the end in a close match," said AU head coach Dave Bucciero. "I want to thank all five of our seniors who did a great job this year and helped contribute to the growth of this program during the last four years."
Wiggins finished with eight saves in goal for the Eagles, while Sutton made one save for the Bison.
