WASHINGTON - The American University women's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to non-conference opponent Princeton on Tuesday at Reeves Field. Sarah Peteraf tallied twice for Princeton in the opening 29 minutes to lead the Tigers to victory. The Eagles fall to 3-9-1, while the Tigers improve to 7-1.
Peteraf got her first score of the game at 12:22 when she received the ball down the middle of the field and took a touch, setting up a perfect shot that beat Eagles keeper Arianna Efstathiou for the 1-0 lead. Peteraf upped the lead at 28:50 when Kayleigh Iatarola sent a ball down the left flank. Peteraf buried the ball to the far post and Princeton led 2-0 heading into the second half.
The Tigers would get second half goals from Barb Previ and Laura Whatley to earn the 4-0 final. Previ challenged an AU defensive clearance and got a good bounce, as the ball lofted over Efstathiou from 18 yards out. Whatley's shot was from 10 yards out to the right of the goal that was low and to the near post.
"We faced a very good Princeton team today, and despite the score, did a lot of positive things," said head coach Dave Bucciero. "We need to build from those things over the next few games in the Patriot League and if we do them a little bit better we will be successful."
American will return to conference action on Friday, when they host Lehigh at 4 p.m. at Reeves.
