WASHINGTON - The American University women's soccer team opened its Patriot League schedule with a win Saturday, upending the Colgate Raiders, 1-0. The win snaps a three game slide for the Eagles and moves AU's record to 7-5 on the year and 1-0 in the PL.

The game's lone goal was scored by Friederike Engel, her first of the season, and assisted by senior Irene Karistinos. Kelsey Wiggins was in goal for the Eagles and stopped three Raider shots en route to the first shutout of her career.

AU started the scoring early, as Engel's goal came just 29 minutes into the game. Karistinos played a free kick up the field and into Raider territory, where Engel controlled the long ball and beat CU goalkeeper Brittany Pearsall, taking a 1-0 advantage.

Neither offense slowed in the remainder of the first frame, as AU finished with seven shots and Colgate six. Both goaltenders were steadfast though and American took its one goal lead into the half.

Colgate started the final 45 aggressive and went on to outshoot the Eagles in the second half, nine to six. Only two of those shots found their way on goal though as the AU defense protected their goalie from the offensive barrage. The Raiders had plenty of opportunities to knot the game up as AU committed nine fouls in the period, but were unable to capitalize.

The Eagles will return to action Friday, Oct. 12, when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa. for a 7 p.m. showdown with Lehigh. AU continues its road swing two days later on Oct. 14 when they visit the Leopards of Lafayette for a match at noon.
