WASHINGTON - The American University women's soccer team opened up the Patriot League portion of its schedule on Saturday at Reeves Field, falling to Colgate, 1-0. Josie Johnson tallied at 13:06 to give the Raiders the victory.

Colgate (4-7-1, 1-0 PL) put pressure on the American defense early in the first half and created the first opportunity two minutes and 14 seconds in. Meaghan Goodwin sent in a shot that sailed wide of the Eagles net. Goodwin would fire off her second shot of the contest just over four minutes later, but could not find the frame, sending it wide once again. The Raiders would not miss on their third scoring chance, as Jillian Arnault sent a cross into the box that found the feet of Johnson. Johnson put her shot past Eagles keeper Arianna Efstathiou for the 1-0 lead at 13:06.

The Eagles made a few substitutions following the goal and got their first shot of the contest at 19:12, when Kelsey Brasher sent a shot wide. AU had its best chances to get an equalizer before the end of the half on a pair of shots on goal taken by Marissa Crollett, but Colgate goalie Rebecca Michlin came up with a pair of saves to send the Raiders into the second half up a goal.

AU (3-8-1, 0-1 PL) came out pressing in the second half and had a couple of scoring opportunities. Mary Riegler half-volleyed a shot just high 10 minutes in and Brasher had her first shot on goal of the day soon after, but again Michlin made the stop.

The Eagles held the majority of the possession in the second half but struggled to put their shots on net, connecting on goal just three times in the game. AU pushed up for a free-kick with three seconds clock for its last effort to score, but time expired as Olivia Heditsian's ball fell just outside of the 18, giving Colgate the win.

Efstathiou finished with two saves for the Eagles, while Michlin made three stops in goal for the Raiders.

AU will return to the pitch on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at Reeves Field. The Eagles will kickoff at 3 p.m. against non-conference opponent Princeton.
