WASHINGTON - For the second straight game American University outshot its opponent but was held scoreless, falling to Long Island University, 1-0, at Reeves Field on Friday afternoon.

After ending the first half locked at zero, with AU holding the 7-4 advantage in shots, American came out explosive early. Just less than five minutes into the second, the Eagles earned their first corner of the day. After two short passes, forward Krystn Hodge (Rye, N.Y./Mamaroneck) used a long ball to find Kelsey Brasher (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) on a run through the box. Brasher used a quick turn to beat her defender and earned the corner after her shot was blocked by a Blackbird defender. Despite getting two shots off of the play, Long Island goalkeeper Felicia Amaral kept the Blackbird's hopes alive and American University was unable to capitalize.

Carrying the momentum from Amaral's saves, LIU transitioned and put the pressure on the Eagles' defense. The Blackbirds earned their fifth corner of the game in the 68th minute and connected, with Brittany Schandelmayer scoring off a header from Nicole Allen's corner kick.

American University's best chance to tie the game came late in the second. With LIU trying to run the clock, its last defender was trying to let an Eagle through-ball roll into the hand's of Amaral. Hodge read the play perfectly and picked up the pass, shooting just wide of the woodwork.

Similar to its last game against George Washington, American had its chances early, but was unable to capitalize. AU outshot the Blackbirds 20-9, forcing Amaral to make 11 saves on the day. American has been held scoreless in its last three matches and is on its first three-game losing streak since the 2005 season.

American University women's soccer falls to 6-5-0 on the season, while Long Island improves to 3-4-1. The Eagles return to action on Oct. 6 in Hamilton, N.Y., facing Colgate in their 2007 Patriot League opener.
