AU Women's Soccer Ties Maryland 1-1 at College Park

Sept. 5, 2008
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The American University women's soccer team gutted out a 1-1 tie to ACC foe Maryland on Friday at College Park. Kelsey Brasher scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the draw for the Eagles.
AU (2-2-1) wasted no time getting its offense started as Brasher scored just 1:48 seconds into the game. Marissa Crollett sent a ball over the top of the Terrapin defense and Brasher used her speed to get to the ball first, taking one touch before chipping the Maryland keeper for the 1-0 lead. Erin Stebbins was also credited an assist.
The Eagles were able to hold the Terrapins off until the 54th minute of play when a breakdown in the AU defense allowed Kaila Sciascia to finish a cross on the back post to knot the score at 1-1.
Maryland (1-2-1) would go on to out-shoot AU by a 19-5 margin, but the Eagles defense and keeper Kelsey Wiggins held strong over 110 minutes of play to earn the tie.
"We showed tremendous depth as a team today," said first-year AU head coach David Bucciero. "Even though we are disappointed with a tie, we showed great heart in stepping into a very difficult environment on the road and continue to show progression with every game we play."
Wiggins finished with seven saves and had a very strong outing in the game, including three in overtime.
The Eagles will have the week off before returning to action against Towson at Reeves Field on Sunday, Sept. 14 at noon.
