American hosts VMI on Thursday

WASHINGTON — The American University women's soccer team host VMI on Thursday afternoon at Reeves Field to kick off its home schedule.

The Eagles began the season in Florida over the weekend and fell to Stetson and South Florida by a 3-0 score in both games.

Junior transfer Gabriela Maldonado led the Eagles with three shots in two games and Charly Slavick added two shots.

Amy Krotine made 12 saves in 135 minutes and Ryleigh Brown made her collegiate debut in the second half against South Florida.

VMI picked up its first win of the season on Monday against Hampton, 4-1. Julianne Knoblett scored twice for the Keydets after Hampton took an early 1-0 lead. Emma Quirk and Taylor Callahan also scored for VMI.

Ceci Keppler recorded the win and is 1-1 on the season with a 1.33 goals against average.

American will travel to VCU on Sunday and hang around the Commonwealth to take on Longwood on Thursday, Aug. 31.
