TAMPA, Fla. – Sarah Collins scored a pair of goals, lifting Stetson to a 3-0 win over American University in the women's soccer season-opener for each team in a match played at USF.
The Eagles trailed 1-0 at halftime, with Collins scoring the game's first goal at the 13:23 mark. She scored again at 74:34 and the Hatters added insurance at 80:00 on a goal by Allison Zaccheo.
American tallied four shots on goal, with one each from Charly Slavick, Kira Flaherty, transfer Gabriela Maldonado and Morgan Brinson. The Eagles were outshot 20-4, including 10-4 in shots on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Amy Krotine had seven saves for the Eagles.
"Overall we are still figuring out the flow on both sides of the ball," said AU head coach Anabel Hering. "Our second half was much better, however we need to work on two quality halves and coming together as a team to start seeing success and results.
"With some of our injured players coming back soon, we will be full force, which should allow us compete with more depth and show our true potential as a team."
American plays host USF on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Eagles' first home match of the season is on Thursday, Aug. 24 against VMI at 4 p.m. Admission to AU women's soccer matches is free.
