WASHINGTON — Abby Sotomayor scored the lone goal for Colgate in the 66th minute to give the Raiders a 1-0 win in the Patriot League opener on Saturday at Reeves Field.
American (1-8-0, 0-1-0 PL) faced a tough Colgate (3-3-3, 1-0-0 PL) squad that outshot the Eagles 16-3 and had a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.
Neither team had many chances in the opening 45 minutes, but the visitors scored the only goal midway through the second.
The goal was as fluky as it comes with Sotomayor chipping a cross that appeared to hit the top of the crossbar and drop into the goal, but the AU defense played the ball as if it was still in play. After a few seconds, the assistant referee indicated the ball had fully crossed.
American will host Richmond on Tuesday in a non-conference match at Reeves Field.
