FAIRFAX, Va. — Sophomore JoJo Miller scored in the 53rd minute, but a pair of late tallies by George Mason secured the victory, 2-1, on Thursday evening at George Mason Stadium.
American (0-3-0) struggled throughout the contest as George Mason (2-1) finished with an 18-6 advantage in shots. Freshman Morgan Lang finished with 10 saves but allowed both goals in the final eight minutes of play.
"I'm very proud of the team tonight," said head coach Anabel Hering. "We played as a unit defensively and had more success attacking in the second half. The game started to open up towards the end and we got unlucky. Overall it was exciting to watch and it was close to a complete performance."
Although neither side scored in the opening half, Mason held an 8-1 edge in attempts.
The Eagles got on the board eight minutes into the second on an unassisted goal by Miller.
The Patriots then responded in the 84th minute on a high shot by Sarah Hardison off a pass from Abby Downey.
Freshman Kyanna Alleyne nearly retook the lead for the Eagles in the 86th minute, but GM keeper Kristen Glad made one of her two saves on the night.
George Mason scored the game-winner moments later after Hardison's initial shot was stopped by Lang, but Nicolette Herdegen tapped in the rebound to put the Patriots ahead late.
American will conclude its four-game road swing on Sunday at Mount St. Mary's at 1 p.m.
