WASHINGTON – The American University women's soccer team took on one of the few undefeated squads left in the country on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles outshot Holy Cross, 15-10, but the Crusaders were able to escape Reeves Field with a 1-0 victory in Patriot League play.
The lone goal in the match came in the 16th minute as Patriot League scoring leader, Aly Spencer, tallied her eighth goal of the year on a high strike that found its way just under the crossbar.
American played a strong game, holding Holy Cross to 10 total shots and five on goal, but could not find the equalizer despite five shots from senior forward Lindsay Muri.
"It's disappointing not to come away with a that one," said head coach Anabel Hering. It was a early miscue by us that led to the goal and we did well to get our chances, but need to do a better job of capitalizing on those opportunities."
AU outshot Holy Cross (9-0-2) in each half, including an 8-5 mark in the second stanza.
The Eagles nearly found the game-tying goal in the final minute as Michaela Cowgill put one on net, but Holy Cross keeper Carly McCabe made one of her four saves to preserve the shutout.
The clean sheet by the Crusaders was their eighth of the year as they have only allowed two goals in 11 matches this season.
Despite the absence of score, the AU attack in addition to Muri's strikes continues to be diverse as eight Eagles fired off shots with four registering two or more.
Patriot League play continues for American next Wednesday at Navy.
