Baltimore, Md. – American took on regional foe UMBC on Tuesday night in Baltimore and ran into a fast-attacking Retriever offense. The Eagles held UMBC scoreless through the final 46 minutes, but could not overcome three first half scores, falling 3-0.
UMBC, who improved to 7-2-0, came out strong, scoring in the 10th minute. The Retrievers followed with an insurance goal in the 29th and their third of the half in the 44th.
Eight Eagles fired off shots in the contest, led by junior forward Kelly Donovan who totaled two. Despite the diverse offense, AU was outshot 13-9.
The Retrievers were able to equal AU's output with the ball with eight UMBC players attacking the American goal and four registering two or more. For the match, UMBC has six shots on goal to AU's two.
UMBC forward Lisa Nanov scored the game-winner, unassisted, and helped on the insurance goal by Jessy Brown. Nikki Boretti made three goals for the Retrievers in the 44th minute, taking the feed from Melissa Hummel.
Senior goalkeeper Charlene Belanger faced three saves facing eight corner kicks.
The action was fierce throughout as 24 total fouls were called with 14 whistles caused by the Eagles.
American returns to Reeves Field this weekend and continues Patriot League play on Saturday against Holy Cross at noon.
