Bethlehem, Pa. – American University women's soccer played a strong match in its 2014 Patriot League opener, but could not find the equalizer after an early goal by Lehigh. The Eagles, in the midst of three-game road swing, outshot the Mountain Hawks, 14-7, but fell, 1-0.
While the American (3-6-0, 0-1-0) was able to find more lanes toward the opposition's net, Lehigh (3-2-1, 1-0-0) equaled AU with five shots on goal.
The Mountain Hawks also made the most of the opportunities, scoring in the 13th minute. Madeline Walsh set it up with a centering feed to Katie Centeno, who came through with score.
Senior goalkeeper Charlene Belanger was able to shake the early goal however, making four saves in the match and keeping the Eagles in it until the final buzzer.
Senior striker Lindsay Muri was again paced the offense, firing off four shots and two on goal. Unfortunately, none found their way past Lehigh keeper Ani Nahaptian, who made five stops for the shutout and her second victory of the season.
American will look to get back on the winning track with a mid-week matchup at local foe UMBC on Tuesday. The contest ends a three-game road trip for the Eagles.
