Richmond, Va. - American University women's soccer ran into a hot VCU team on Sunday afternoon in Richmond, Va., falling 3-0 to the Rams.
VCU scored all three of its goals in the first half. After 21 scoreless minutes, the Rams scored twice in just over five minutes and got their third only two minutes before the break.
Despite the offensive flurry in the first, the American defense was able to right the ship in the final 45, holding VCU off the scoreboard.
The Rams were able to control the ball and worked their way to six corner kicks in the match, compared to three for the Eagles. Two of AU's corner kicks came in the second half as the mid-point adjustments for American made it a different game.
The Eagles could not find its way on to the scoreboard, but AU was able hold VCU out of the net in the second as well.
Senior goalkeeper Charlene Belanger was active for much of the match, making four saves against 17 shots, seven on goal.
American continues a three-game road trip and kicks off Patriot League play next Saturday against Lehigh at 3 p.m.
