American University women's soccer, coming off a 2-0 win over Delaware State on Friday, was edged by MAAC challenger Fairfield, 1-0. Senior goalkeeper Charlene Belanger made five saves in the match, but AU could not find the equalizer late.
It was an evenly matched contest with Fairfield just edging American in shots, 11-10, while 14 total fouls an a card were issued.
The lone goal came with less than 17 minutes to play in regulation, as the Stags were able to get behind the Eagles' defense for the go-ahead score.
"We knew it would be a physical game and I thought we played well. It was just Fairfield who was able to come through with the goal," said head coach Anabel Hering. "We can definitely take our style of play shown here today into our matchup against Howard on Wednesday."
After a back-and-forth first half and start to the second stanza, Fairfield found its way on to the board with a goal in the box fro six yards out.
The Stags fed off the momentum getting several more good looks, but Belanger made some highlight reel-level saves to keep AU in the game.
The Eagles pressed late, looking for the equalizer, but Fairfield keeper Kathleen Early improved to 5-1 this year with four saves in the match in the clean sheet effort.
American finalizes its three-game homestand this Wednesday, when they take on D.C. foe Howard on Reeves Field at 4 p.m.
