The American University women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision at Villanova in the season opener Friday afternoon in Villanova, Pa.
After a scoreless first half, Villanova (1-0) struck in the 48th minute with a Stephanie Myers goal. The assists were credited to Heidi Sabatura and Victoria Gersh. The Wildcats added an insurance score in the 68th minute on a Reanna Marino score. Sabatura picked up her second helper of the match along with Emily Damstrom.
The Wildcats outshot American (0-1) by a 16-1 margin in the match. AU's lone shot, which came by Carleigh Morba in the 33rd minute, was saved by Villanova goalkeeper Kelsey Quinn.
Charlene Belanger played all 90 minutes in goal for American, registering four saves.
The Eagles will remain in the Philadelphia area over the weekend before taking on St. Joseph's on Sunday, August 19. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
