Women’s Soccer Ready For This Weekend's Patriot League Tournament

After a successful regular season in which the American University women's soccer team finished with a 5-2 Patriot League record, the Eagles will challenge for the Patriot League Tournament this weekend in Hamilton, N.Y. The second-seeded Eagles will face third-seeded Bucknell on Friday night at 7:30 in one semifinal with the winner moving onto Sunday's PL Championship at 1 p.m. The Patriot League Champion will earn the conference's automatic NCAA Tournament berth.

American and Bucknell squared off on October 3 at Reeves Field with the Eagles picking up a 3-1 home victory. Senior forward Kelsey Brasher led American with a goal and an assist. Senior midfielder Erin Stebbins and freshman forward Jasmine Mohandesi scored AU's other two goals, while senior defender Erin Koch recorded two assists in the win. Sophomore goalkeeper Arianna Efstathiou made four saves for AU and earned the victory.

The winner of the American-Bucknell matchup will face the victor of the other PL semifinal between top-seeded Colgate and fourth-seeded Navy. The Eagles split their regular season matchups against these two squads. AU fell at Colgate this season on October 17, 1-0, in double overtime, and defeated Navy last Saturday, 3-0, on Senior Day at Reeves Field.

In the 20th season of American University women's soccer, the Eagles are looking for their second ever Patriot League crown. The 2002 squad defeated Navy and Colgate by identical 2-1 scores to win the program's only Patriot League title.

In Head Coach David Bucciero's second season at the helm, American took a giant step forward in 2009, doubling their total win output (10) from the 2008 campaign. Additionally, with the 5-2 conference mark (15 points), the Eagles finished only one point behind regular season champion Colgate (16 points) in the Patriot League regular season.  AU was selected to finish in fifth place in the preseason Patriot League poll.

Earlier this week, the Patriot League released its women's soccer award winners. Junior defender Friederike Engel was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and Bucciero was selected as PL Coach of the Year. Additionally, Engel and Brasher were named All-Patriot League First Team, while Koch and junior midfielder Brooke Sheppard were All-PL Second Team picks.
