AU Women's Lacrosse Loses at Richmond, 20-12

RICHMOND, Va. - American University dropped a 20-12 decision to the University of Richmond in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday at First Market Stadium.

Richmond jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Kira Sonberg's unassisted goal put the Eagles on the board at 24:25 to make it 3-1. The Spiders struck again just over a minute later as Allison Furstenburg scored from a free position.

Richmond (7-7) led 6-1 when Brit Ferguson scored for American to cut the deficit to 6-2 with 12:56 to play in the first. The Eagles won the ensuing draw and used the offensive possession to cut the Spider lead in half, 6-3, on a Lisa Schaaf goal at 11:43.

The Spiders scored the next five goals to open up an 11-3 advantage with 5:22 remaining in the half. Brittany Finnegan scored at the 3:44 mark for American and Furstenburg tallied once more to put the score at 12-4. Jackie Lane scored her first of the contest with 18 seconds on the clock to put the score at 12-5 at the intermission.

The Eagle defense could not find an answer for the Spiders, as Richmond scored three goals in the opening two minutes of the second half, to lead 15-5. American trailed 17-7 half way through the second when Richmond struck again on a goal by Mandy Friend to up its lead to 11 goals.

Lauren Aksionoff and Jackie Lane each added a pair of goals before the end of regulation, but American dropped its fifth straight, falling to Richmond 20-12.

J. Lane finished with a team-high four points (3g, 1a). Aksionoff scored a pair of goals and added an assist, while Sonberg and Ferguson each tallied two goals. Amanda Makoid, Lisa Schaaf and Brittany Finnegan rounded out the Eagle scorers.

American (5-9) will return to Patriot League action on Sunday at noon, when the Eagles take on the Crusaders of Holy Cross.
