AU Lacrosse Overwhelms Lafayette, 18-7, To Remain Undefeated in Patriot League

WASHINGTON - The American University women's lacrosse team scored early and often to beat Lafayette, 18-7, on Saturday at Jacob's Field in Patriot League action. The Eagles improve to 5-4 overall, and have an unblemished 3-0 league mark. Lafayette falls to 0-7, 0-3.

Kira Sonberg got American on the board just 50 seconds into the game when she tallied an unassisted goal. The Eagles would score four more goals with 18:40 left in the first half to take a 5-0 lead. Lafayette broke onto the scoreboard a minute later, as Maria Drehwing scored to make it 5-1. AU would take a comfortable 10-2 lead into the second half.

The Eagles remained efficient on offense in the second half as well, as they built their lead to 14-4 on a Caitlin Bell goal from Gina Ibello with 17:37 remaining in the game. American would get four more goals, one each from Jackie Lane, Lisa Schaaf, Lauren Aksionoff and Tahra Johnson to close out the game, taking the18-7 win.

Aksionoff finished with four goals, while Lauren Lane added two goals and three assists. J. Lane scored two goals and had two assists, while Sonberg and Ibello each had two goals and two assists as well. Schaaf finished with two goals and Bell had one goal and one assist. Brit Ferguson and Brittany Finnegan each had a helper.

Kristine Vida made 15 saves in goal for the Eagles and Finnegan and Johnson had a team-high three ground balls.

American returns to action on Wednesday when they play George Mason at home at 4 p.m.
