Jackie Lane Scores with 15 Seconds Left to Lead AU Lacrosse to 9-8 League Win over Lehigh

WASHINGTON - Senior attacker Jackie Lane scored with 15 seconds remaining in regulation to lead the American University lacrosse team to a 9-8 Patriot League win over Lehigh on Sunday at Jacob's Field. AU evens its record to 4-4 and is now 2-0 in conference play. Lehigh falls to 5-3, 1-1.
Lehigh took an 8-7 lead with 16:35 to play in the second half Christy Smith's second goal of the game. American evened the score at the 10:42 mark on Lauren Aksionoff's unassisted tally to knot the score at 8-8, setting the stage for the J. Lane game-winner.
The Eagles scored the first goal of the second half on a Lauren Lane score from her sister, J. Lane five minutes in to lead 7-6. The Mountain Hawks tied the score at 7-7 on Lauren Dykstra's third goal of the contest at 20:42.
Both teams played to a 6-6 draw after the first 30 minutes of play. Lehigh grabbed the first goal of the day, but American responded with a pair of J. Lane goals to go up 2-1 with 26:43 left in the first. The Mountain Hawks registered the next three scores to build a 4-2 advantage, but the Eagles answered with two goals of their own. The two squads would trade two goals each to end the half knotted at six a piece.
J. Lane finished with a game-high five goals and one assist for the Eagles. L. Lane scored a goal and an assist, while Aksionoff, Caitlin Bell and Brittany Finnegan added a goal each. Gina Ibello recorded two assists and Amanda Makoid added a helper.
American's Kristine Vida earned the win in goal, making 11 saves and picking up a ground ball. Bell led the Eagles in ground balls (three) and draw controls (five), and also caused two turnovers.
The Eagles will host Lafayette on Saturday at 1 p.m. in PL play at Jacob's Field.
