AU Lacrosse Comes From Behind to Top Longwood, 11-7

FARMVILLE, Va. - American University used a 5-0 run over the final 18:54 of the second half to seal an 11-7 come-from-behind victory over Longwood in non-conference women's lacrosse on Tuesday. Lauren Aksionoff scored the unassisted game-winner with 17:07 left in regulation to give the Eagles their second-straight win.

American (3-4, 1-0 PL) trailed 6-4 heading into the second half. A pair of free position goals courtesy of Gina Ibello and Brittany Finnegan knotted the score at 6-6 with 20:49 remaining. Longwood reclaimed a 7-6 advantage just over a minute later on Amanda Bereznay's second goal of the game from Liz SellMayer. Caitlin Bell would tally the equalizer off the next draw control and the Eagles would score four unanswered goals to claim the 11-7 win.

Longwood (1-6) took a 3-0 lead early in the first half on unassisted goals from Allie Armstong, Page Farmer and Kesley Dean. Lisa Schaaf got the Eagles on the board on a feed from Aksionoff at 16:26. AU tied the score a 3-3 on a pair of Jackie Lane goals, but the Lancers would tally three unanswered to take a 6-3 lead. Ibello scored a free position shot with 33 seconds left in the half to close the first 30 minutes with Longwood up 6-4.

J. Lane led the American offense with three goals. Ibello and Finnegan each scored two goals, with Ibello adding an assist. Aksionoff finished with one goal and two assists, while Schaaf, Lauren Lane, and Bell each scored in the win.

Kristine Vida continued her strong stance in goal for American, registering 16 saves and one caused turnover. Tahra Johnson and Whitney Kovar each picked up two ground balls for the Eagles, and Finnegan recorded a game-high four draw controls.

American will return to action on Sunday when they host Lehigh in Patriot League action at 2 p.m. on Jacob's Field.
