Comeback Attempt Falls Short for Women's Lacrosse in 8-6 Setback Versus Drexel

Feb. 20, 2008
WASHINGTON - The American University women's lacrosse team stormed back from a 7-2 deficit late in the second half and got to within one goal of tying the game, but the Eagles were unable to get the equalizer in an 8-6 loss to Drexel Wednesday at Jacobs Field.
American faced deficits of 6-1 and 7-2 in the second half, the latter coming after the Dragons' Nicole Adams buried an unassisted goal with 18:05 left in the game.
However, the Eagles nabbed momentum when Jackie Lane scored consecutive goals at the 11:03 and 8:24 marks to make it a three-goal game, 7-4. Brittany Finnegan notched an unassisted goal at the 6:24 mark to make it 7-5, and then with 3:24 left, Lauren Lane snagged a feed from her sister, Jackie, and buried a shot on the run to make the score 7-6. The Eagles would have plenty of time to attempt to complete the comeback.
It looked as if they would do just that, when, with 2:04 left in the game, the Eagles came down on a 2-on-1. However, senior attacker Lauren Aksionoff's shot was saved by Drexel goalkeeper Lauren LaBella, her 11th save on the day. Just 22 seconds later, the Dragons iced the victory with a goal by Becca Drylie-Perkins.
"We showed a lot of competitiveness and heart in the second half," AU Head Coach Katie Woods said. "However, we need to learn how to play a full 60 minutes."
AU goalkeeper Kristine Vida shined in the net, making 11 saves. Jackie Lane led the Eagles' offense with three goals and an assist, while adding three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Drexel improves to 2-0 on the season. The Dragons were led by Jessica Bill, who had two goals and an assist. DU had seven different goal scorers on the day.
The Eagles fall to 0-2. American returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 23, when it visits Davidson for a 1 p.m. start.
