WASHINGTON - The American University lacrosse team is set to open its 2018 schedule on Saturday, Feb. 17, as the Eagles host Richmond on Jacobs Field at noon.
The Spiders enter the weekend matchup with a 1-0 record so far this season after they secured a dominating victory over Campbell on Saturday, 16-5.
Richmond enters the game with a 23-2 edge over AU in the series, including a 13-0 run that dates back to 2002.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
AU returns three of its top six scorers from last season, including senior Jennifer DeSimone who led the way for the Eagles last year with 39 goals. DeSimone is one of three seniors on the young AU squad, along with Leah Brennan and Lexi Perez.
Seven juniors round out the returning upperclassmen, including midfielder Sam Breeze who was second on the team last year with 28 ground balls and third with 12 caused turnovers. Junior Fiona Geier also returns in the cage. She led the Eagles with 141 saves last season for a .434 save percentage and a 13.86 goals against average.
This year's squad, led by head coach Emma Wallace, boasts a lot of youth with seven freshmen and eight sophomores. Included among their number are two of the top scorers from last season with Erica Skowron and Amanda Medjid. Skowron closed her freshman campaign with 12 goals and seven assists for 19 points while Medjid tallied seven goals and five assists for 12 total points.
SCOUTING THE SPIDERS
Richmond opened its season with a 16-5 victory over Campbell on Saturday. Kim Egizi led the team with five goals and three assists for the day followed by four goals from both Julia Schmuckler and Mia Castagnero. Goalkeeper Megan Gianforte closed the game with 13 saves and a .722 save percentage.
