WASHINGTON - The American University lacrosse team claimed its first Patriot League win of the season on Saturday, April 12, as they delivered a key 12-7 victory over Army West Point.
The Eagles now rise to 3-10 for the season, 1-5 in league play, while the Black Knights continue their conference skid with a 0-6 PL record, 4-10 overall.
Junior Jennifer DeSimone and senior Sarah Bootman shared leadership positions in the Eagles' offense with a pair of five-point contributions. DeSimone tied her career-high with five goals followed by Bootman who tied her career-high with three goals and two assists for the afternoon. A total of five Eagles contributed to the team's final point tally, with sophomore Sam Breeze putting away two goals and freshman Caitlin Schaefer and senior Shauna Norris each adding one.
Sophomore goalkeeper Fiona Geier led the team with four ground balls, while Bootman brought down a team-high three draw controls.
The Black Knights were led by a four-goal effort from Rachel Hornick. Manuela Cortes also netted a pair while forcing a game-high six turnovers, and Amy Johnston rounded out the scoring with one goal. Erin Jollota added a game-high six ground balls.
AU took a quick lead in the game, as Breeze put away her first of two free position goals within the first five minutes of play. The Black Knights tied the game up twice before a free position goal from Cortes game them their only lead of the game at 3-2 with less than seven minutes in the half. Bootman responded less than 30 seconds later, tying the game up at 3-3 and sending the Eagles on a 4-0 run to head into halftime.
DeSimone continued AU's run with an early goal in the second half, giving the team a four-point cushion before a pair of quick goals from Hornick brought Army back within striking distance at 7-5 with 25 minutes left of play. The Black Knights stayed within two of the Eagles through most of the half, responding to goals from DeSimone and Bootman to trail 9-7 heading into the final ten minutes.
American ran away with the last eight minutes of play, though, starting with DeSimone's fourth goal of the afternoon. Schaefer followed with her first off of an assist from Bootman before DeSimone closed out the scoring in the final 30 seconds, building the Eagles' last, and largest, lead of the game at 12-7.
AU will be on the road for a midweek contest at Navy at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19. The team will then return home for one final time this season, hosting Holy Cross at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, for Senior and Alumnae Day.
