Eagles Fall in Road Contest at Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. - Junior Jennifer DeSimone put away her sixth hat trick of the season on Saturday, April 1, but the American University lacrosse team fell in a Patriot League road contest at Lafayette, 20-9.

Five Eagles contributed to AU's tally, led by DeSimone's three-goal effort.  Seniors Madison Hoon and Sarah Bootman added another three points off of two goals and an assist each, while senior Shauna Norris and freshman Amanda Medjid each added a goal.

Hoon and Bootman both tied career-highs with Hoon leading the team in ground balls (four) and Bootman bringing down three draw controls.  Sophomore Sam Breeze also made a big impact with a career-high, and game-high, four caused turnovers.

American (2-9, 0-4 PL) put pressure on Lafayette (9-3, 4-0 PL) early on with some good looks from Hoon and sophomore Brooke Stapleton, but the Leopards got on the board first with a goal from Kirsten Wilhelmsen.

The Eagles were quick to respond with three back-to-back goals from DeSimone (two) and Bootman.  Lafayette controlled the next 15 minutes, though, with an 11-1 run to build up to a 12-4 lead.  AU was able to cut that margin to six in the final two minutes of the half, with Norris and Medjid each putting away their only goals of the afternoon to close the half at 12-6.

Both teams put up early goals in the second half, starting with a quick shot from Lafayette's Mairead Janzer followed by DeSimone's third goal to bring AU back within six.  Despite another goal from both Hoon and Bootman, the Eagles weren't able to cut that margin any further, as the Leopards hit on a couple runs throughout the second half to secure the win.

Jane Kirby led the Leopards' scoring efforts with nine points (eight goals, one assist), followed by six points (four goals, two assists) from Kirsten Wilhelmsen and five points from Emma Novick (three goals, two assists).  Dana Smith had a game-high seven ground balls, and Kristin Schaen led both teams with six draw controls.

The Eagles will return home next weekend with a 1 p.m. draw against Bucknell on Saturday, April 8.  For the latest on American Lacrosse, stay tuned to AUEagles.com and follow the team on Twitter @AU_Lacrosse.
