Lacrosse Falls in PL Contest Against Loyola Maryland

WASHINGTON - The American University lacrosse team closed out its two-game homestand on Wednesday, March 29, with a 19-8 loss against Loyola Maryland.

The Eagles will enter the final month of the regular season with a 3-7 overall record, 0-3 in the Patriot League, while the Greyhounds remain undefeated in league play at 3-0 and 4-6 overall.

Junior Jennifer DeSimone just missed tying her career-high with a team-high four-goal tally on Wednesday.  She entered the midweek matchup off of a career performance against Lehigh on Saturday, where she led the Eagles with five goals.

Senior Madison Hoon followed with her second hat trick of the season, putting away three goals and one assist for a season-high four points.  Senior Shauna Norris was the only other Eagle to get on the board as she scored her first goal of the season off an unassisted shot in the first half.

Senior Sarah Bootman led the squad with three ground balls while junior Lexi Perez contributed a team-high two draw controls and three caused turnovers.

The Greyhounds were also led by a four-goal effort, as sophomore Hannah Powers put away a game-high seven points off of her four goals and three assists.  Senior Cami Whiteford followed with a hat trick, followed by two goals from junior Hannah Savage and freshman Caitlyn Gunn.

Sophomore Taylor VanThof pulled down a game-high 20 draw controls.

Loyola took control of the game early, going on a 6-0 to start play before DeSimone put the Eagles on the board at the 23:59 mark.  DeSimone scored again three minutes later, followed by another quick goal from Norris but Loyola would close the half with another run, scoring seven goals to AU's one.

American put up a good fight in the second half, nearly matching Loyola's five-point period with four from Hoon (two) and DeSimone (two).  The Greyhounds closed the scoring for the day, though, with a pair of points in the final 11 minutes to end with their 19-8 advantage.

The Eagles will hit the road on Wednesday, April 1, for a 1 p.m. contest at Lafayette before returning home for a pair of back-to-back games against Bucknell (April 8) and Army (April 15).  For the latest on AU Lacrosse, stay tuned to and follow the team on Twitter @AU_Lacrosse.
