DeSimone Highlights Patriot League Home Opener

WASHINGTON - Junior Jennifer DeSimone tallied a career-high performance to lead the American University lacrosse team on Saturday, March 25, as the Eagles fell in a tight matchup against Lehigh, 14-10.

AU now sits at 2-7 for the season, 0-2 in the Patriot League, while the Mountain Hawks rise to 7-2 and 2-0 in the league.

DeSimone led the squad with a career performance, putting away five of AU's ten goals off of her eight shots.  Senior Sarah Bootman contributed another pair while sophomore Sam Breeze and freshmen Erica Skowron and Caitlin Schaefer added one each.

The Mountain Hawks were led by a five-goal tally of their own, courtesy of junior Haley Wentzel.  Senior Julianne D'Orazio added another three, followed by two from both senior Allison LaBeau and freshman Autumn Ryan, and one more from sophomore Kaitlyn Quinn.

Lehigh got on the board first with a pair of back-to-back goals from Wentzel at 24:18 and 23:49.  From there, it was a back and forth battle between the two squads, with DeSimone, Schaefer and Breeze bringing the Eagles within one before a final goal by Wentzel gave the Mountain Hawks their 6-4 edge heading into halftime.

The battle continued into the second half, as Lehigh built up a five-point lead after a 3-0 run within the first ten minutes.  A pair of back-to-back goals from DeSimone brought the Eagles within three, but a final goal from Lehigh's Allison LaBeau in the final four minutes gave the Mountain Hawks their final four-point margin at 14-10.

American will return home next week to host Loyola Maryland at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29.  For the latest on AU Lacrosse, stay tuned to and follow the team on Twitter @AU_Lacrosse.
