EASTON, Pa. – Junior Olivia Mangan scored her first hat trick of the season to lead the American lacrosse team to an 11-10 Patriot League victory over Lafayette on Saturday.
With the win, the Eagles improved to 4-9 overall and 2-3 in PL action, while the Leopards dropped to 3-11 overall and 1-5 in the league.
American started out strong, getting out to a 3-0 lead just over three minutes into the contest. The Eagles still led, 5-2, with 14:12 remaining in the first half, but Lafayette closed out the period on a 4-1 run to tie the game heading into the intermission.
The Eagles regained their advantage with three straight goals to open the second half and remained in control. Although the Leopards tallied the final two scores of the contest, including a man-up goal with 1:12 remaining, American was able to hold off Lafayette for the win.
"We came out fast, but Lafayette was able to get back in it," said American head coach Emma Wallace. "We had a strong defensive second half and Rose Redfoot had a great game.
"Our offense was patient today, and we had a very balanced scoring effort."
In addition to Mangan's three goals, junior Jessica Wojciechowski finished with two goals and an assist, while Terese Buechli and Jamie Silverman each pitched in two goals. Freshman goalkeeper Rose Redfoot came up with nine saves for American, including two critical stops in the final minute of action.
Maggie Carver led Lafayette's offense with three goals and an assist, while Charlotte Rath added two goals.
The Eagles are back at home on Wednesday, April 8, when they host 16th-ranked Loyola Maryland at 4 p.m.
