NORFOLK, Va. – Despite coming back from a three-goal deficit, the American University lacrosse team dropped a 7-6 non-conference contest to Old Dominion on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Eagles fell to 2-8 overall on the season, while the Monarchs improved to 7-3 on the year.
American got out to a strong start, scoring two goals in the first two minutes of play. However, ODU responded with three straight scores to take the lead with 17:59 remaining in the first half. A goal from senior Jamie Silverman knotted the score at 3-3 heading into the intermission.
The Monarchs put together another run to start the second half, taking a 6-3 lead with 10:51 remaining in the period. Junior Jessica Wojciechowski ended ODU's scoring streak with a free-position goal less than a minute later, while junior Olivia Mangan tallied back-to-back scores to tie the game with 4:20 on the clock.
However, Old Dominion's Jessica Liberty notched her fourth goal of the game with less than two minutes on the clock to put the Monarchs back ahead to stay.
American outshot ODU, 29-15, for the game, and held a 23-14 advantage on ground balls. However, Karen Hayde made 15 saves for the Monarchs to help secure the win for Old Dominion.
The Eagles return home next Saturday, March 28, when they host Patriot League foe Bucknell in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
