UMBC Tops Eagles, 9-5, in Wednesday Lacrosse Match

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Five different players scored for American University, but a four-goal day from Abby Wilson lifted UMBC to a 9-5 victory over the Eagles on Wednesday in a non-conference women's lacrosse match at Jacobs Field.

Olivia Mangan, Terese Buechli, Jessica Wojciechowski, Madison Hoon and Jordan Harrington each scored a goal apiece for the Eagles (1-3), with Wojciechowski adding an assist.
Wilson, a senior attacker for the Retrievers (2-2), finished with four goals and a pair of assists. She came into the game with six points, and doubled her scoring total by the end of the day.

"UMBC's goalie (Kelsey Major) had us dialed in and we were unable to convert on our offensive opportunities," said AU head coach Emma Wallace. "Tough play in the midfield and a better second half for the defense kept us in the game.

"We look forward to getting back to work to find our complete game, and can't wait to face Hopkins on Sunday."
Major finished with 12 saves in the Retrievers' net, including 10 in the second half. AU's netminder Rose Redfoot finished with six.

UMBC took a 6-1 lead late in the first half. After Buechli scored for the Eagles to cut the deficit to four, Wilson ended a long possession by UMBC with an unassisted tally with 14 seconds left before halftime to make the score 7-2.

American scored the first two goals of the second half, coming within 7-4 with 20:47 to play on a goal by Hoon. But Wilson scored on a feed from Tianna Wallpher just 19 seconds later.

Harrington scored for AU with 17:53 left, but Wilson completed the scoring with 14:26 left with her final tally of the day.

American held a 27-20 edge in shots, with draw controls even at 8-8.

American plays host to 18th-ranked Johns Hopkins on Sunday at 1 p.m.
